PERSONALITY:

With their parents constantly away on business and most of their family and peers unable to distinguish between the two of them, Kaoru and Hikaru drew to one another. Their near-telepathic connection as twins led them to eschew other playmates and, each able to rely on the other as a partner in crime, they were the architects of endless practical jokes even in early childhood (their victims often being well-meaning relatives or one of their endless string of nannies). There was only ever one nanny that truly won their adoration… probably due to the stories she told of her colourful past as a criminal. However, her stories turned out not to be in the past at all. After stealing from the Hitachiins' safe, she abandoned the twins, smashing their hopes with the assurance that they would probably never be anyone who could tell them apart. They were only four years old.

Already insular, it was from this point that they built their barriers higher and stronger so they would never let anyone close again. To the twins, it was as though outsiders thought their being identical made them a single entity or, worse, into two separate, yet interchangeable ones, neither of them particularly valued. This led to them forming a habit of manipulating and 'testing' those around them - doing unto others before they could be done unto - with the results only serving to reinforce their worldview. It didn't matter that the games themselves were often rigged - unwinnable, or ones like the "Which one is Hikaru-kun Game" that the twins would not allow anyone to win.

By the time the twins are courted by Tamaki to join the Host Club, they are thoroughly set in their ways, and despite proving to be the catalyst that provokes them out of this thinking, Tamaki's 'courtship' of the twins is not without its... mostly downs. While the twins conduct their more personal and vicious attacks in perfect synchronicity, Kaoru's shut-downs tend to betray him. Kaoru recognises that he and Hikaru had much more to lose than Tamaki in reaching out from their isolation - though that same isolation will eventually suffocate them, it is still better than being hurt by an outsider when they saw it coming.

Although Tamaki eventually sees through them and wins them over, they initially join the host club claiming "to kill time". Rather than alienating people by playing mean-spirited pranks, they started playing up to their customers’ desires, utilising their relationship to do so. Gradually they began to open up bit by bit, to the extent that their classmates comment that they have grown more outgoing and gregarious. They remain inseparably close, however, and though their tendencies to "test" others are generally downgraded to more harmless teasing, they do still persist - with the occasional take-down thrown in for fun.

Kaoru is the younger of the twins (by a matter of minutes), and shares a good deal of personality traits with brother – they are somewhat spoiled and childish, and enjoy playing games, pranks and tricks on their classmates (although Kaoru’s ill-intentions in these games are “a level less” than his brother’s). More often than not, the twins together whip each other up purely by virtue of being on the same wavelength - finishing each other's thoughts and expanding on each other's ideas. Under these circumstances - caught up in Hikaru - Kaoru is more likely to take a joke too far. When at rest, his own personality comes more to the surface.

He is observed to be sweeter-natured of the twins, and much better at dealing with people than Hikaru. A dreamer and a worrier, he has a habit of getting lost in his own thoughts, spending a deal of time ruminating on his and Hikaru's relationship with the host club. Family is extremely important to him - Hikaru coming first above anything, always, and his friends are so close that they're practically family as well, and after the betrayal in his early childhood, he prizes loyalty in others very highly. He himself is loyal to those inside his "bubble" but has no scruples about messing with outsiders for the protection or advancement of those he loves. Although Kaoru is the more emotionally mature of the two, and tries to solve his own – and his brother’s – problems, he tends to overthink them. Being the quieter and more reflective twin makes him the more observant, and this, in turn, equips him to manipulate others into perceived 'resolutions', rather than approaching them and properly communicating his concerns. This is why it's only when he’s been pushed too far and is frustrated that he raises his voice - his anger is harder to provoke than Hikaru's though no less explosive (as seen in the showdown with Tamaki at the end of their 'courtship').

Although given to daydream, Kaoru is simultaneously more and less realistic of the two in terms of his outlook on the world. In many cases, he feels safety in preserving the 'status quo' - as with his and Hikaru's closed-off world and now with the host club - albeit in a more benign way. At the same time, Kaoru has grown enough to understand the untenability of holding onto something he has outgrown - but perhaps has a little more growing to do before he understands that something coming to an end doesn't necessarily mean that anyone has to lose out While he recognises the need for Hikaru to one day move forward, potentially finding someone else to share his life with, the great irony of Kaoru’s ushering Hikaru out into the real world is that he is unsure of how he himself would cope himself without his brother: he more convinced that he will find himself left behind than he is of his ability to manage on his own.


POWERS/ABILITIES: Twintuition/nigh-on telepathy with his brother. He is also the son of a famous fashion designer and a software developer, and the grandson of an Ikebana master. This hardly elevates him to a similar status himself but this does mean that, having been exposed to them since childhood, Kaoru has above-average skills in these areas, which he is known to have employed in the Host Club.
